This class is a blend between West African dance steps and Afro-Colombian dances. Afro-Colombian dances are a collection of dances from the Pacific and the Caribbean coast of Colombia. The rhythms are heavily influenced by West African culture, as well as indigenous Native Colombians. While wearing traditional Colombian folk skirts we will learn the basic steps of beautiful dances like Cumbia, Currulao, Bunde, Bullerengue and you will come to understand what these dances represent in their communities. These dances have fascinating histories and have brought communities together, creating ties of cooperation and ways to express joy, sorrow and passion. This class starts with a warm up, then we form lines, dancing along the space with Afro pop music. We clap to the beat, stomp our feet and learn some super easy steps. In the second part of the class build our choreography over five consecutive weeks where we will be using skirts(women), handkerchief (men), baskets, sticks, etc..... Develop some fitness, boost the connectivity between both cerebral hemispheres, support motor, emotional, and intellectual brain functions, as well as feeling the joy of moving to music without high impact or full cardio. ------ Level — This is a low impact class and ideal for anyone wanting to ease into dance after a period of inactivity. Payment — Full payment for the block is required up front. Costumes — We will provide the Colombian folk skirts for women and a handkerchief for men, for you to borrow each class. Duration — 5 consecutive classes indoors/outdoors/online. **If a face-to-face classes are cancelled because of COVID, classes will move online via Zoom with AfroPop music. Please think carefully before you do the payment, we do not offer refunds for change of mind. Hall requirement: Double dose Covid Vaccination.
